For this, an unburdened, experimenting mind, any watercolours you have on hand, and a passive observer are perfectly suited.

Luke (23 months old) had a free hand in choosing colours and shapes. There were no rules for him. He wouldn’t have understood them anyway.

I interpreted his results in simple ways. It was a wonderful process of seeing.

The first three pictures came together in about 30 minutes. During that time Luke was very focused and refused to be drawn away from painting. I wasn’t allowed to take the brush away…
